I Speak for the Trees (but do you really?): Climate Crisis, Ecological Literature for Children and Adolescents, and the Need for Critical Literacy Wednesday, April 24, 2024 – 5 to 7 p.m. – MTS Auditorium (191 Harcourt St.) “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”
“I went right on biggering . . . selling more Thneeds. And I biggered my money, which everyone needs.” – Dr. Suess, The Lorax In the middle of this school week that begins with Earth Day, join us for pizza and puzzling together about the ecological literature for children and adolescents that we use in our Early, Middle, and Senior Years classrooms to explore the climate crisis. What are the messages (implied and overt) about individual and collective responsibilities for climate crisis? Who profits from these messages? How can we use literature to have robust, critical conversations with children and youth about the complexities of attempting to live with hope and agency in this time that often feels overwhelming? We will start with a short “Critical Literacy and Neoliberalism Forces 101” Primer and Refresher, situating the need for critical literacy in our K-12 classrooms. Then we will dive into examples from literature for children and adolescents that are often used in EY, MY, and SY settings. Coming from a critical literacy stance and working together, we will share our noticings, wonderings, and questions about the (counter)narratives in the words and/or images of the texts we engage with in our classrooms. Please feel free to bring some of your favourite eco-literature titles and texts to add to our critical analysis and to offer inspiration. Presenters
