About RCGW
Since 1956, the Reading Council of Greater Winnipeg (RCGW) has been dedicated to promoting literacy and developing lifelong readers. We have a proud history of being a literacy leader in city of Winnipeg and its surrounding area. We provide professional development for educators, share resources and ideas on our website, celebrate I Love to Read month, promote literacy in the community, honour literacy leaders and up-and-coming teacher candidates, and support literacy projects.
RCGW is a council of the International Literacy Association (ILA), a Special Area Group of Educators (SAGE) of the Manitoba Teachers’ Society (MTS), and a council of the Manitoba Reading Association (MRA). We have received ILA's Honour Council award for 32 years. Our local, national, and international connections let us bring you the best and latest information about literacy to support you in achieving our mission.
Mission: To promote literacy through professional development and community outreach.

Volunteer
The Reading Council of Greater Winnipeg is a Special Area Group of Educators (SAGE) of the Manitoba Teacher's Society, led by a volunteer executive composed of active teachers who span grade levels, years of experience, and expertise areas. Our leadership includes new and experienced teachers alike, which makes for productive, insightful conversation about literacy practices. Our executive and its committees always welcome new volunteers.
We recognize your volunteer commitment on the executive with some wonderful benefits. First, you will have a direct say in our MTS PD Day and program offerings. Have you always wanted to chat with your literacy teaching hero? Now is your chance!
We often have the exclusive opportunity to dine and have informal conversations in a small group with our keynote presenters. You will be surrounded by like-minded people who love reading, books, and the development of literacy in all people.
We actively encourage members to join one of our various committees. We also invite all members to join us at our executive meetings. Meetings in the spring and fall are held in-person while winter meetings are held virtually. They begin at 4:30 p.m. and last no more than two hours. Please contact the RCGW President at [email protected] for more information.
