The Reading Council of Greater Winnipeg (RCGW) has been dedicated to promoting literacy and developing lifelong readers since 1956. We have a proud history of being a literacy leader in Winnipeg and its surrounding area. We are a Special Area Group of Educators (SAGE) of the Manitoba Teachers' Society and a local council of the International Literacy Association.

The Manitoba Reading Association and the Reading Council of Greater Winnipeg are teaming up to honour educators. The hard work of educators needs to be celebrated. Please read below for information on how to nominate a Literacy Leader near you. Reading Council of Greater Winnipeg (RCGW) – Promoting literacy through professional development and community outreach The RCGW would like to celebrate all the teachers and community leaders who have advanced literacy throughout our province. Is there someone in your school division or community who deserves to be recognized for their outstanding work in the field of literacy? Perhaps you know a teacher who has done some remarkable things in the areas of classroom teaching, teacher education, or research. Maybe you’re aware of a member of the RCGW who is retiring or moving away from Manitoba who should be honoured for their accomplishments here, or a community member who has raised awareness about the importance of reading. You may work with or know about a colleague who has made significant literary contributions at the local or provincial level. We would love to help you honour these individuals with our Annual Awards Evening! Please see the PDF poster below and fill-in form on how to nominate the teacher or community member you think should be recognized. Nominations are due Tuesday, April 30th, 2024.
Manitoba Reading Association – “Every Manitoban a Literate Manitoban” The Manitoba Reading Association would like to honour those who support literacy initiatives across the province. Or maybe you know a community member who volunteers their time to implement literacy initiatives in your area. Please see the PDF poster below on how to nominate a literacy leader in Manitoba. Nominations are due April 30th, 2024.
I Speak for the Trees (but do you really?): Climate Crisis, Ecological Literature for Children and Adolescents, and the Need for Critical Literacy Wednesday, April 24, 2024 – 5 to 7 p.m. – MTS Auditorium (191 Harcourt St.) “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”
“I went right on biggering . . . selling more Thneeds. And I biggered my money, which everyone needs.” – Dr. Suess, The Lorax In the middle of this school week that begins with Earth Day, join us for pizza and puzzling together about the ecological literature for children and adolescents that we use in our Early, Middle, and Senior Years classrooms to explore the climate crisis. What are the messages (implied and overt) about individual and collective responsibilities for climate crisis? Who profits from these messages? How can we use literature to have robust, critical conversations with children and youth about the complexities of attempting to live with hope and agency in this time that often feels overwhelming? We will start with a short “Critical Literacy and Neoliberalism Forces 101” Primer and Refresher, situating the need for critical literacy in our K-12 classrooms. Then we will dive into examples from literature for children and adolescents that are often used in EY, MY, and SY settings. Coming from a critical literacy stance and working together, we will share our noticings, wonderings, and questions about the (counter)narratives in the words and/or images of the texts we engage with in our classrooms. Please feel free to bring some of your favourite eco-literature titles and texts to add to our critical analysis and to offer inspiration. Presenters
