WRITTEN BY SHANNON MORIN
Happy New Year Winnipeg educators! At this time of year, I am reminded not only of setting goals – personal, professional and as an organization – but also of what we do throughout the year to achieve those goals. The steps RCGW takes to achieve its goals in service of the Winnipeg literacy community are many. There are numerous people who support the work of RCGW, and I would like to take the time here to review the work of our board in order to support our members by providing an array of programming, sharing of important findings and techniques through social media and through our blog. Overall, we want to support member’s educational choices in the classroom because the rich literacy learning they bring to our youth will change the world, one mind at a time.

“I Love to Read Month” is a month long celebration that is held each year to encourage reading, writing, and sharing in the joy of literacy. This year’s theme is entitled “The Great Canadian Reading Race”. Although Canada is a large and diverse country and many of us have not had the chance to explore it all, literacy can provide a window into our country and all it has to offer. The Reading Council of Greater Winnipeg has prepared its annual I Love to Read Month Idea Calendar. Please share the calendar with teachers, students and their families. It would make a great addition to your school newsletter. I have included activities for students of all ages to have them explore the country that they live in and have them share their learning with others. I hope that both teachers and students will have fun with the suggested activities and that they will challenge the students to learn something new. I also hope that families will be able to share the excitement and writing together. In addition to the idea calendar, I am planning to return to the Cancer Care Unit at the Children’s Hospital, where I can read to patients, do an activity, and make a monetary donation so that the staff can continue to update their children’s and teen’s libraries and magazine subscriptions. This provides children, teens, as well as parents with reading materials that are appealing and entertaining, as well as supportive. About the Author – Brittany Bell serves as the I Love to Read Committee Chair on the Reading Council of Greater Winnipeg. Brittany currently teaches Grade 3 at Mitchell Elementary School in Hanover School Division. She is passionate about helping students find pleasure and enjoyment in reading. |
